What to do about animal cruelty

For Connecticut

When you have witnessed an act of animal cruelty here is a protocol to follow:

  1. Contact your Chief of Police and your Animal Control Officer (ACO)

    • Be clear and concise on what you have witnessed. If possible, have an address and  pictures and others who have witnessed the cruelty.

    • (Cruelty is defined in CT General Statutes 53-247, which is publicly available on the web).

  2. If you are not getting a satisfactory response, contact the Connecticut Department of Agriculture (DoAG) at 860-713-2506 and explain your complaint about the cruelty. Again, be clear and concise and ask them to call you back after they have looked into the case.

  3. If that still is not working, find out who your CT State Rep is, as well as your CT State Senator (you can google “Connecticut General Assembly" and tap on "Find your Legislator”).

    • Call the office of your Rep and/or Senator and voice your complaint, be sure to follow up with an email (for a paper trail) and ask for a meeting in their district office or in Hartford. Again, always be clear and concise about what you have witnessed and be sure to let them know this is an important issue to you.

  4. Also alert your local animal advocacy group
